I had high hopes of posting these pics on Thursday night, but considering that I didn't get back to my hotel until who knows what time and then my computer cord almost electrocuted me, well, it didn't happen.

But here are some shots from Sara Beltran's Thursday afternoon show in Chelsea at Root Studios.

Sara had seven models clad in some simple and chic black wetsuits to let the jewelry be the focal point.

The models, some on chairs that Sara designed in India, were positioned around big pieces of driftwood with diamond-embedded neon pink shark jaws hanging from the ceiling while a series of iphone shots she took of some neon cord she shaped into a wave hung on the walls. Proof that things needn't be fussy or overdone for major impact.

Am I the last to arrive at the No Pudge party? I recently had more than my fair share of No Pudge brownies at a dinner party and I couldn't believe that they're all natural and fat-free. Have you guys every tried these?

You add non-fat yogurt to the mix - or applesauce if you want lactose-free - bake, and out comes some of the chewiest brownies I've ever sunk my teeth into. So random, but so good.

A friend who's written about palmer/harding in the past sent me a link last month to a piece on them that ran in British Vogue.

The same article ran again in American Vogue's February issue and I was excited to see former El Centro student Levi Palmer getting major recognition stateside.

Palmer studied pattern making and womenswear at the downtown Dallas Community College before moving to London to study at Central Saint Martins.

His and his design partner Matthew Harding's beautifully artful take on a wardrobe's most basic staple makes me wonder what they would do if they produced an entire RTW collection. I have a gut feeling I'd be smitten.

My fantastic TS&S readers, I'm in moving hell. I spent more than 12 hours yesterday moving into a new house - well, not new, but a fantastic '50s ranch - and am beat. I need a drink. I want someone to unpack my boxes. I want to curl up in a ball and wish all the stress away. The past two weeks of slowly packing while also working, mom-ing, and wife-ing has taken time away from here, but I will be back in full force on Monday. Prom prom. In the interim, here's where I just moved out of. Our casa treated us well over the past several years.

Once we're settled into the new place, I'll post some pics of that, too. It's a new chapter for us and definitely a new style of home. For the last two days I've been preparing for my 2-day cleanse that begins tomorrow. I've eliminated meat, bread, caffeine, and refined sugar and have been starting each day with a warm water with lemon. The sugar (and bread) thing has been the hardest, so thank goodness for the Sweet Tooth fresh pressed juice at Whole Foods.

I've had one of these for the past two afternoons and I feel like it's helped get me over the afternoon slump that my latte usually gets me out of. It's a mix of beets, carrots, pear, and ginger and I had no clue that combination could be so delicious.

My sweet friend Steven just introduced me to lighting from Austin's Machine Shop.

The styles are decidedly industrial and each light is made by hand.

A sketch is made, the glass is blown, and steel is forged to create simple, beautiful pieces that give mass production a thumbs down.

I love the chain pulley on the first two lights. There's something so satisfying about pulling on one of those things and having a light glow on or slowly fade out.

I've been researching juice cleanses for the last few weeks and have finally settled on Blue Print Cleanse's Juice 'Til Dinner program. I've been afraid I'd set myself up to fail if I did a full on juice-only cleanse, so Juice 'Til Dinner seems like a more feasible option for me.

My two-day cleanse begins on January 6 when I'll receive what you see above: four juices to drink throughout the day, a snack, a raw dinner, and a treat to finish my day. Do you feel like I do? I first met the owner Michelle Teague while I was in Marfa on assignment for Texas Monthly, which yielded the September 2009 Street Smarts column.

Teague moved to Marfa after working as a costumer on the set of "There Will Be Blood."

And she opened the store and filled it with beautiful blouses, bags, hammocks, and palm frond necklaces that she picked up on her travels to Mexico.

I bought a Mexican house dress from there about a year ago and I wear it just about every night and still have it on while I fix my kids breakfast and pack their lunches (I'm wearing it now). I wonder if I look like my mother and grandmother to them as I putter about wearing it.

By now you're sure to know that Dallas-born and -bred Taylor Tomasi Hill was snatched from her style and accessories directorship at Marie Claire by Moda Operandi to be their new artistic director.

While at MC she'd begun working on an eponymous capsule collection for Hong Kong's super luxe department store, Lane Crawford, and it's set to hit shelves in January.

From what I've read so far she's doing a version of her ever present cat eye glasses, some lace skirts, and other TTH-inspired closet staples. Now if I can just figure out how to get my hands on some of this stuff stateside, I'll be good.

Dallas: Bistro 31

For about a month now I've been going to Bistro 31 a little too often for lunch. There is something about the location and atmosphere here that makes me want to linger for hours over a glass of wine. Which, btw, I really don't have the time or alcohol tolerance for.

The last time I was there I had a three-hour lunch - I convinced myself that I was owed 3 hours to bs over crostinis and pasta because I met a deadline - and the people that walked in with the same thing on their minds made me feel totally validated. At the table next to me was super agent Jan Miller (she reps Phil McGraw, Maria Shriver, Rob Lowe, Nicole Richie, the list goes on. If you're a writer, you know her), at the table behind me was the Dallas Museum of Art's Art Ball co-chair Julie Hawes, mingling in the back was writer Eric O'Keefe, and off to the side was blogging phenoms Hanh Merriman and Nini Nguyen.

And now that Bistro is serving breakfast, my a.m. hours are about to be hijacked, too.

But I do have a question: Is the influx of relentless traffic in Highland Park Village killing you like it's killing me? I used to pop in to HPV all the time for a coffee, to pick up flowers at Avant Garden, take my kids to Mi Cocina. Valet for coffee? No, thanks. The new restaurants are creating a bit of a cluster, no?

The super talented actor/singer, who happens to be the son of the president of the Dallas Federal Reserve, graduated from Harvard and was a member of the university's a cappella group, Krokodiloes.

He gained some notoriety with this hysterical Tom Cruise spoof, left over footage from the film Superhero Movie and this month you can catch him in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar.

Dallas: Jean Paul Gaultier

Just back from the media preview of the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the DMA and I'm telling you, rush, rush, rush over there this Sunday, November 13 for the opening.

Monsieur Gaultier has been in Dallas for the past fews days (he had dinner at Al Biernat's night before last and Al's team refused to let him pay. Gaultier then sent over a huge thank you basket to the restaurant yesterday) and there was an interesting discussion with him about his work.

He told us about his grandmother's influence on him and how she told him about corset-wearing ladies drinking vinegar to induce contractions so every time they hiccuped they'd pull in their corset straps tighter to get the smallest waistline possible.

The first thing a little mind boggling about the exhibition is some of the mannequins. When you first walk in you can't tell if the faces on them are moving, if it's a real human being, or if your head is tripping.

Then you soon realize that a video loop of a real human face is being projected onto each two dimensional mannequin face, creating an animated talking being.

The Dallas Museum of Art is host to the exhibit's U.S. debut. Not LA, not NY, not Chicago. Dallas. This is big.

Olivier Meslay, the museum's interim director said it best: "The perception of Dallas is not what Dallas actually is. Dallas has many races, many cultures. The Jean Paul Gaultier exhibitions reflects what Dallas is." Well, maybe not that lady riding a man like a horse, but you get the idea.

For many this will be the first time they'll get to see what haute couture looks like, a chance to really examine the construction of a piece of clothing and why so many people consider it an art.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk opens this Sunday, November 13 and runs through February 12, 2012.

Dallas: Rosson Crow

I've been watching artist Rosson Crow's career for a few years now and every time I see something written about her or see one of her new paintings my heart kind of skips a beat.

I like everything about her work - the big, messy brashness of it all, the crazy scale, the Keith Haring quality. I'm so drawn to it.

29 year-old Crow, who was born and raised in Dallas, did undergrad at NYU and got her MFA from Yale, has become a bit of an art world superstar and you can see her in the December issue of Elle.

"I want the viewer to be overwhelmed. I want the space to feel like it is caving in on the viewer and that they are forcibly entering the world of my paintings. Crow is scheduled to have a solo exhibit next spring (feb 25-mar 31) at Honor Fraser in LA and that, my friends, is reason enough for me to hop on a plane.

I discovered Uptown Popcorn this past summer when I wandered by their NorthPark location and my nose led me into the store. I tried a sample or two - omg, jalapeno ranch was so good - and promptly ordered 30 small bags of confetti colored popcorn for my daughter's 4th birthday party.

For the holidays they've introduced some seasonal flavors - think Candy Corn, White Chocolate Pumpkin Spice, and Killer Kettle - and I think this may be my alternative to eating entire pumpkin pies this Thanksgiving.

Forget Clif Bars, Kind Bars, and Odwalla energy snacks. Yesterday I had my first Bearded Brothers energy bar and flipped my lid over how good there are.

Made in Austin by brothers Caleb and Chris, the bearded athletic outdoorsmen created a health snack that's almost entirely raw, 100 percent organic, gluten free and packaged in reusable pouches.

They are moist, chewy, and sweet and I ate two yesterday even though I was already satisfied with the first one I devoured after my workout.

El Paso: Piamita

My El Paso friends - I have a lot of them. I'm actually convinced that the most creative Texans are from El Paso - introduced me to their childhood friend Karla Martinez several years ago.

At the time Karla was an editor at T Magazine, The New York Times and she was sweet enough to take me around during one of my first fashion weeks in New York.

Martinez is now the fashion market and accessories director at W and earlier this year she debuted Piamita, a small line of clothing she designs with her dear friend Cecilia de Sola.

The minute that I saw the lookbook I flipped out and told Jackie Bolin at VOD that I wanted everything. VOD is the exclusive retailer for Piamita in Dallas and come November 19 when the first collection of Piamita resort hits VOD, I can finally get my hands on all of this lounge-y wear.

It's so chic, no? Leave it to Karla to hit it out of the ballpark with her first go at a clothing line.

I had the lovely pleasure of getting schooled at LAFCO in Highland Park Village last week. I love walking in this place, but I'm always overwhelmed by the selection and don't ever feel confident enough to ask questions about products - the packaging is so pretty, but what the heck does it say?! - so I always end up leaving with something basic like a candle.

So I welcomed the chance to get educated about this Florence, Italy-based apothecary founded by Dominican friars in 1221. I learned that not only are the products made the same way today as they were hundreds of years ago using natural raw materials, but because of this the concoctions are essentially homeopathic, perfect for the person seeking chemical-free products.

These are scented waters and talcum powders. Why would you want these? You can chill them and give your face and body a spritz for a daily refresher and the powder can be used to lightly dust your sheets for a crisp, clean subtle scent to slip into at night.

These seasonal incense smell deliriously good. The crimson box is my favorite; an earthy, almost terra cotta, clay pot kind of smell.

And this is Santa Maria Novella's first Christmas-inspired fragrance. Just in time for the holidays.

These bags of potpourri are a mix of Tuscan herbs and flowers. One Santa Maria Novella fan in Dallas came in the store and told them she pokes holes in these bags and leaves them in her closet. They last for months.

Austin: Saint Cecilia

There's nothing really new about what I'm saying here. I just love my experience so much every time I stay at the Saint Cecilia that I always feel compelled to post pics from recent jaunts to Austin.

Aside from the Hastens beds, inspired decor, and dreamy ambience, a visit to the gift store is a highlight.

A lot of the items can also be purchased at Bows + Arrows and Spartan on South Lamar, but it's nice that the hotel gift store is curated by them.

The lending library always has some interesting reads.

After paying the bill at check out an outdoor breakfast complete with a leisurely look at the New York Times is a must.

Who wouldn't want to start a day this way?

And the perfect latte and Fever Tree ginger ale - the best ginger ale ever and I consider myself a GA expert - while waiting for a truffle omelet, fruit crepe, and turkey sausage. Wish every morning could be like this.

Round Top: The Prairie

Just when you thought you were far too into mid-century modern to ever swoon over shabby chic again comes Rachel Ashwell's new B&B in Round Top.

The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell has opened for business right in time for the fall antiques fair which begins September 28.

Set on 46 acres, the property has five homes situated around each other one of which is a common area/lounge where you can gather for meals and drinks.

The homes are perfectly outfitted in Ashwell's signature look: slip-covered sofas, Farrow & Ball wallpaper, flowers in jam jars, claw foot soaking tubs, and chandeliers.

Wouldn't this be a fantastic place to spend a family holiday, say, Thanksgiving or Christmas?

These beds look so unbelievably cozy. I think I'd sink into them and never emerge from the room.

I've wanted to do Round Top forever, but have hesitated because of the lodging - I'm spoiled, what can I say? - but this is more than perfect. I'm going. Who's in?

Houston: A Bientot

A Bientot has moved into bigger digs in the same shopping strip, but right around the corner from their original location on Westheimer.

It's now two stories and is essentially on River Oaks Blvd but it's still overflowing with tons of trendy, affordable accessories.

The layout is much better and you don't feel like you have to uncomfortably squeeze by the tables and shelves to get to things.

Some of the Kenneth Jay Lane bracelets they have are fabulous, some with amazing dragon heads with green eyes and others with zebra stripes and rhinestones. There's a entire table of stuff that channels Rachel Zoe.

Everywhere: Missoni Mayhem

After carpool this morning I stopped by Target to pick up some things for the house. On my way to get batteries I saw all the Missoni racks. It looked like the place had been looted. And mind you this was at 8:15 am, a mere 15 minutes after Target's doors opened.

I've never seen anything like this. You'd of thought there was a scavenger hunt for hundred dollar bills by the looks of the ladies racing up and down the aisles with their shopping carts overflowing with zig zagged dresses and pillows.
And I'm wondering: Is this because these women have always really loved Missoni, have pined for it and want their signature look at a great price or is the urgency to have a sweater a byproduct of the hype that's been generated by bloggers, Target's facebook page, and the media? What do you think? Is Missoni at $40 something you'd push another person out of the way for? Or is your dignity more valuable?
Or do people just want to resell the stuff on Ebay?
Target's website is even down this morning and I'm thinking it was overwhelmed with demand for the limited edition pieces.
The children's section did have a slew of darling sweater dresses and tights left over and I did end up buying some things for Pilar. But is it more meaningful to have a shopping cart full of Missoni for Target items for $800 - the woman in front of me - or better to just save that money and invest in the real thing? Thoughts?

New York: Favorites so far

It's obvious from what's coming down the runways: next spring is all about prints. I guess I'm going to have to embrace this trend otherwise I'm not going to be able to buy much next season. Herewith, my favorites thus far:

Tommy Hilfiger. With Peter Som consulting they've got my attention. Hilfiger reeled me in with this fall's silk pajama pants - which BTW, they're completely sold out of. I spent a portion of Saturday afternoon begging someone at TH to please, please, please call me back if the person ahead of me on the size four list didn't pick up her pants. No dice. I'm waitlisted.

New York: Fashion Week

Apologies all around for being MIA! Last week was wheels off. Deadlines, a visiting friend, an early Friday flight to New York. Manhattan was blanketed with machine gun toting military due to terrorist threats and I've never been more freaked out to ride a subway in my life. Getting a cab was pure hell since everyone else felt the same way. Regardless of that, I was glad to be in Manhattan during the 9/11 Memorial. I did what Bloomberg asked and went about my day and business, although in a pretty somber, reflective mood.

Fashion Week began the day I arrived and was in full swing over the weekend. Yesterday Derek Lam sent some great looks down the runway, many of which are so doable. These printed pants - I'm finally warming up to prints - would be great with a white button down.
The cut of this dress is so subtly sexy.
And the makeup that Estee Lauder Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux did was perfection.
The thick brows, warm skin, and nude glossy lips are exactly what I want to look like. Clean, simple, fresh, but thoroughly polished.
And even though the nails look vanish-free, they are actually polished with EL's Nude Attitude nail lacquer. So pretty.

Houston: Candylicious

I've been hearing about Candylicious for the past several months after a friend discovered it on a recent trip.

It's a candy store filled with all kinds of old-school and modern day goodies, a sweet tooth fantasy land.
But the real draw are the candy sculptures. Using a glue gun and a lot of creativity, they attached color coordinated candies to styrofoam numbers - perfect for birthdays or anniversaries - or custom shapes to make original centerpieces for parties or events.
My daughter had a Barbie cake for her birthday this year, but I think next year we'll go with one of their Barbies with the candy ball gown.
They can custom make any shape you want, be it a pirate ship, The Hulk, Superman, Dora. You name it, they make it and cover it in the sweets of your choice.

Dallas: Cold Ones Artisan Paletas

Earlier today we had Cruz's 7th birthday party.

For the past four years he's wanted a water slide and it's always a hit with his friends.
But this year we added Brent Fogarty and his fabulous paleta bike to the mix.

His company, Cold Ones, will come to your event and hand out icy cold Mexican-style popsicles handmade from local/organic ingredients.

Today he brought a slew of orange vanilla bean and lemon lavender and I'm not kidding when I tell you they were so delicious and the perfect thing to eat in the stifling heat.

San Antonio: The Monterey

I'm itching to take a trip down south to SA to see my familia, but work is prohibiting me from doing much else but write. Aside from hanging out with my grandmother and watching forensics shows with her, I'm dying to go to The Monterey for dinner.

I went to a party at owner Chris Hill's home when I was in Careyes for Sara Beltran's birthday in May. Chris was crazy nice and we talked about Monterey as well as his other watering hole, The Esquire Tavern.

The menus at both places look mouthwatering - the corn with lime yogurt, chile and cojita and octopus with white curry and country ham at The M have my name all over them - and I feel that with John Besh's Luke and the upcoming opening of Andrew Weissman's Luxury, SA is having a foodie moment.

Dallas, Houston, SA, Austin: Army Navy Store

Just about every city has an Army/Navy store. I visited one earlier this week - seriously, if you know a 6 to 10 year old boy this place is a gold mine of birthday presents - and unexpectedly purchased a few things for myself.

Those friendship bracelets that everyone is wearing right now? There's enough colorful rope and cord here for you to make hundreds.

My son's birthday party is this weekend and the opening of BHLDN in Houston is making me want to head down there for some party supplies (and stop at Buc-ee's along the way. Cannot get enough of their jerky sticks and Beaver Nuggets, these totally addictive sweet crunchy treats).

Even though Mortar traffics specifically in men's clothing, it's still one of my must-stops when I'm in Houston. The lines they carry - Hamilton Shirts, Rag & Bone, Farm Tactics, Garrett Leight California Optical - are always inspiring and beautifully made with great stories behind the designers.

I'm constantly checking out their blog, which is seriously one of the best ones out there. It's always thoughtful and gives great information. I kind of consider it the place to go when I want to know something that I already don't, when I want an insider-y newsy nugget to toss out to my friends that will give me instant cool cred.
This month they've received some new books from Assouline. Be sure to read their blog. I promise you'll be hooked.

Kerrville: Wagonmaster

You may have read my feature about Leon Miller in FD Luxe a couple of months ago. In case you didn't, you need to visit his website - or if you live in the hill country, stop by his car lot - to drool over his pristinely renovated Jeep Wagoneers.

They are so gorgeous. Philippe Starck, Tommy Hilfiger, and the Prime Minister of Kuwait all agree. Miller has sold all of them Wagoneers from his fleet. Starck's was shipped to Paris.
Tooling around in one of these vintage rides is more chic than anything made in this decade, don't you think?

Dallas, SA, Austin, Houston: Central Market

This is totally random, but I've just had a revelation tonight called the honeydew nectarine. I devoured two, Pilar ate one and licked the pit.

I bought a few of them today at Central Market and wasn't exactly sure what to expect. They ended up being a less sweet, less juicy, more meaty version - totally satisfying to bite into - of the white nectarines that I usually go for. In a word: perfect.

Marfa: Garza Design + Build

I wrote about Jamey Garza and his Marfa-based furniture design company a few months back for FD Luxe. Shelby Wagner is redecorating my den, which right now is a mess of a yucky sectional and scattered toys (dang kids!), and I've been thinking about some of Garza's cozy leather chairs.

If you're a fan of Liz Lambert's, then you're surely a fan of Garza's. He designed all the furniture for the San Jose and the Thunderbird.
These look positively cozy. I love the idea of curling up in one of these and reading.

Dallas: A few obsessions

I'm obsessed with some recent acquisitions, some items that every time I walk by or wear make me smile.

First up: My monogrammed guest towels from Anne Grace - if you've not been to Kerri Davis for her impeccable selection of stationery and gifts, you must run over and see her immediately. She's located in the back room of Cabana and it's hands down the best paper boutique in the city - and Niven Morgan Mustique hand soap and lotion. I had my towels done in the same shade of turquoise and I'm so glad I did.
2. Sue Gragg-designed gold and diamond hoop earrings, an 11-year anniversary present from Mr. H. The diamonds run around the entire circumference of the hoop, but on the front half they lie on the outside and then on the back half they run along the inside giving a continuous view of the gems. Genius. And Chanel's No. 19 Poudre, an iris perfume with musk base notes.
3. A new Dezso necklace.
Isabel Marant Dickers boots in chocolate brown suede. Jackie at VOD might have 2 pairs left. They are terrifically comfortable.

Houston: Agate Ranch + Marfa

One of my favorite people, Agate Ranch + Marfa designer Kathy Bracewell, is having a trunk show of her gorgeous West Texas agate necklaces Wed, Aug 3 and Thurs, Aug 4 at Muse in Houston.

Earlier this year Kathy hosted a slew of us at her gorgeous Marfa ranch to shoot Koch's spring 2011 lookbook. She was the best hostess EVER. She greeted us in her white pick up at the gate of her ranch and in a pretty monogrammed cooler she had white wine, coffee, and beer for us to sip on while we toured her property. How much do you love that?
Anytime Kathy loves something she says "It's so fine!" and now I've completely adopted her saying and it rolls off my tongue all the time when I'm smitten with an object, a pair of shoes, a dress, etc.
Anyway, stop by her trunk show, which benefits SISHA, an organization that fights human trafficking in Cambodia.

Oh, the events that unfolded this year. One broken shoulder, countless outdoor showers, a breakdance routine with a jailhouse pose, swimming for hours in the ocean, Pilar's first brass ring at The Flying Horses, a hermit crab on the beach, a canoe ride to Menemsha, endless cards games with Cruz, new friends from Philadelphia, reacquainting with cousins, aunts, and uncles, and the scattering of ashes in the glass clear Atlantic on a blue sky summer day. Can't get much better than that, my friends.

Menemsha: The Galley

Love going to Menemsha to have lunch at the Galley. Right at the entrance to the docks, it's perfectly situated for people watching while you eat.

Step up to the window and place your order.
Crab cake sandwich sounds good, but I can't ever bring myself to veer from Barbie's White Bean Sandwich.
Always have to end the meal with a vanilla chocolate cone.
The menu is right by the order window. We usually call up there at 11 am when they open and place our order so we don't have to wait in the monstrous line.

West Tis: Farmers Market

Every Saturday we head over to the Farmer's Market in West Tisbury. We have three very specific stops: 1. Khen's for egg rolls, iced green tea, and veggie fried rice. 2. Beetlebung for bagging our own lettuce. 3. Pam's Pesto for what's hands down the best basil/parm concoction I've ever eaten. Here are some pics from last week:

Cold and windy here in Chilmark today. To make my day a little brighter I'm wearing a new Chan Luu necklace that my husband bought me over the weekend. Luu had a trunk show at Carly Simon's Vineyard Haven boutique, Midnight Farm, and while I love her signature wrap bracelets, I wanted something outside what she's known for. This bead necklace is interwoven with strands of rhinestones and pearls. A fun update on the traditional African beads.

I was browsing around and found a McFadin bag. You may remember the Sabinal, Texas McFadin sisters from a piece I wrote about them in FD Luxe last year (thanks for the tip, Jordan!).

Chilmark: In the house

Every summer home has particular provisions, but there are some that are absolute necessities. Here are a few requisites for a fruitful island stay.

Cape Cod Salt and Vinegar chips. I never knew that chips could serve as an app, but here they most certainly are.

I never eat English muffins at home, but here I can't begin my morning without one smeared with butter and jam.
Stones or shells from the beach Sharpie-scrawled with guest names for place cards.
The must-have reads: The Vineyard Gazette, The New Yorker, and a copy of The Island Book, the local yellow pages/phone book. I can't ever remember the number to the Chilmark Store or The Galley, so this is a must.
An accessible DIY bar. I can't believe that my husband actually found Tito's in Edgartown.
A well-stocked liquor closet. Thank goodness Our Market in Oak Bluffs delivers (I'm sure that Taylor from one of my favorite blogs, Miles to Go, can agree. See her Vineyard post here).
Lots of games. Never know when the weather is going to change and you have to be prepared for a rainy day lock down.
Books. Lots of them.
A collection of sea shells.
And I just love this shot. Who needs a television when grandma's outdoor cushions and a tea towel double as a spaceship?

Edgartown: NRO Kids and Shoe Cabana

There are so many places in Edgartown and Vineyard Haven that I love to shop when I'm here, but two that top my list are NRO Kids and the recently opened The Shoe Cabana.

NRO is filled with darling finds from Petit Bateau, Rachel Riley, Ralph Lauren, and Papo d'Anjo,
cute Vivienne Westwood jellies for little girls,
rope bracelets from Nantucket Knotworks,
cozy Vineyard sweaters (and sock monkeys!),
and oodles of old school games. Right next door is The Shoe Cabana.
It's a slim little spot that's filled with K Jacques, Missoni, Tory Burch, Diane Von Furstenberg,
Marc Jacobs, and Sperry Top Sider. Perfect offerings for chic, but low-key island life.

We're here. We arrived at my mother-in-law's summer retreat Sunday evening and this is where we'll be for the rest of the month. This is the lawn I was married on 11 years ago and now my kids frolic here every July. The property opens onto the Atlantic. It's a gorgeous thing to look at everyday.

The beach is a quick 60 seconds down the sandy path. Today we had our first beach day.
Buckets in hand, they are ready to play.
Over the stones and into the bitingly cold water.
My kids refer to this as Grandma's beach and it does feel like it belongs to only us. There's no one to be seen for miles.

Dallas: Equinox & Tata Harper

My doorbell just rang and I had a delivery with some of the best news. Turns out that Equinox is now carrying Tata Harper's eponymous line of skincare products and will also offer her signature facial.

I know you've read about Harper before - in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Allure or on one of my favorite blogs, Elements of Style. Her products are 100 percent natural and organic certified by France's Eco-Cert and everything is made on her 1,200 acre Vermont farm.
This couldn't have happened at a better time. My skin has gone nuts on me over the last week and I was just about to make an appointment with my dermatologist. But now that I have one of Tata's Deluxe Beauty Sets I'm going to give it a whirl over the next two weeks while I'm out of town.
Fingers crossed that it helps with some blotchiness and I'll come back from the Vineyard with not only a clear head, but also clear skin.

Dallas: Rihanna

Last night Nivea invited me to hang out in their suite at the American Airlines Center for the Rihanna concert - Rihanna is their spokesperson. I arrived about 9:15 pm and Nivea's PR people told me that she'd just landed around 8:30 in Dallas on a G5 chartered from NYC. She was running behind due to weather and having her makeup done as we spoke.

About an hour or so into the concert the pyrotechnics went awry and lights above the stage caught on fire. We all just stared at the flames billowing from the stage while the concertgoers on the floor scrambled to get out of the arena. Then the alarms went off and we were evacuated from the AAC. Bummed as I missed "Rude Boy", "Umbrella", and "SOS."
On the way out Nivea gave us the requisite goody bags - this one filled with Rihanna's latest CD, Nivea cremes, and an iPod shuffle. I got home, took a shower, and slather the creme all over my body and I have to say I'm hooked. It's super thick and creamy, but doesn't leave a greasy residue. I think I just found my new moisturizer.

Guess who's in this month's Vogue India? Beltran, of course. The girls at Vogue India have pinpointed hipicita as someone to watch and after all the people that constantly ask me about her and her line, Dezso, it's no surprise that she's blowing up.

Deszo was recently picked up by Barneys, but in Dallas you can buy at Forty Five Ten. This September, blondie will be here for a trunk show right before fashion week where you can scoop up pieces from her newest collection - think gold, diamonds, tanzanite, beach chic. You can't get much better than that, no?
I've tried on this cuff many times and the raw shapes of the stones are simply gorgeous. As soon as she says I can, I'll post pics of the new collection. I promise, you will flip.

Austin: Frank

Back from a weeklong vacay! Nothing like sequestering yourself away from technology for a while to make you miss it more than ever.

I just got a notice about Frank, Austin's high-end hotdog and beer joint, now offering a little nod to Mexico with its new Sonoran Dog. The beef dog is wrapped in bacon, deep fried, and split down the middle and filled with cheese.
Then, to make matters even better, topped with pinto beans, onions, mustard, and jalapeno sauce. I feel heartburn coming on just writing that.

San Antonio: Ocho

I had the pleasure of visiting Liz Lambert's Hotel Havana in San Antonio last year a few weeks before they were due to open the doors. I've not been back since, but now that I've seen these photos of the hotel's completely renovated restaurant and bar, Ocho, I'm going to have to forgo my family's home next time I'm down south and check in here for a day or two.

The turq and mustard yellow are my favorite color combos. It's so rich-looking.
I'm feeling Tito's poured over ice and topped off with a fizzy pour of Topo Chico.
I can't even tell you how long I've been drinking TC. So glad that everyone else is coming around. It's big, round bubbles are better than any other soda you've tried, I promise.

After several rounds at Ocho, I'd ordered room service and have this delivered to cure any ailments.

Dallas: Mottega & Mark Moussa

Mark Moussa is kind of a rock star in the world of home decor. His Dallas-based Arteriors creates everything from side tables and mirrors to home objects and wall hangings. But what I've always loved most about Arteriors are the lamps and lighting.

I think Moussa must feel the same way, as he's hit on a genius idea with his new venture, Mottega, a company solely dedicated to client-designed custom lamps that are delivered to your home in 2 weeks. You go online, chose the lamp base shape, the color, and the shade, and voila, your perfect lamp will be delivered in 14 days flat.

Arlington: Blake Mycoskie

Arlington's Blake Mycoskie, aka the chief shoe give, became the chief sunglass giver on Monday. He and his team unveiled their new product earlier this week (I know it's Wednesday. I'm not exactly priding myself on punctuality lately) and I like what I saw.

Austin: Contigo

One more reason Austin's east side is the best place to be: Contigo. The restaurant is owned and operated by Ben Edgerton and Andrew Wiseheart and they were inspired by Edgerton's family's South Texas hunting ranch of the same name.

I like their earnest explanation for opening: not everyone is able to visit the ranch, so they wanted to bring the ranch to them. They like to sit outside, drink beer and margaritas, and eat good food with warm friendly people. This is the essence of Contigo.
And how gorgeous is this picture below? It makes me want to be there right now. All that's missing is some Willie Nelson and tejano music and I'd be in heaven.
Make sure you check out their website. Their blog will give you a good idea of how these boys operate, what their values are, and I guarantee that you'll be swooning as much as I am. And I've never even met them.

What's in the tube? Mycoskie unveils the next product in his TOMS buy-one-give-one empire next Tuesday at a handful of Neiman Marcus stores across the country, one of which happens to be at NorthPark. Does anyone want to meet me there at 12:30 pm to see what the big reveal will be?

It's that time again. Stores start moving current season gems out the door to make room for the upcoming shipments of new clothing and shoes. Barneys is always my favorite place to get shoes and the 40 percent off sale is in full swing. A few of my favorite finds:

YSL strappy gold wedge. Was $1,085 is now $649.
YSL cork wedge. Was $695, now $419.
Manolo Blahnik Bersena. Was $995, now $599.

Lanvin wedge. Was $1,245 is now $799.

I know $799 is still some serious coin, so I, like many of you, will have to wait until the next markdown before I can even consider any of these kicks. Fingers crossed that they still have my size floating around somewhere.

I can't even begin to tell you how long I've been searching for classic children's pajamas. Not long john styles with dinos and princesses loudly printed all over them, but simple button down and gown styles for boys and girls.

My friend recently told me that she found a cute cotton gown by Carters that I'm excited to see, but tonight I came across these darling creations at Busy Bee.
How sweet are these?
Even the smocked style below got me happy
This one looks so light and airy. I kind of want one for myself.

Dallas: Overground Project

I've been MIA in Mexico (my next post will be about Careyes) and just back in town. Wanted to let you all know about this Saturday's skateboarding exhibition at the Overground Project, a private skate park in South Dallas.

A slew of pro riders are in town for the afternoon event that honors the late Jeff Phillips and benefits the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas. Come out for food and drinks. My kids are so psyched about it.

Just one more reason I love my neighborhood: these colorful knit sleeves that have popped up over the last couple of months on trees outside the Lakewood branch of the Dallas Public Library. You can also spot them at the corner of Gaston and Abrams. Doesn't it make you smile? Love.
